It works by feeding raw material—such as rock, dirt, gravel, sand, topsoil, mulch, compost, or construction and demolition (C&D) debris—onto a vibrating screen deck that “scalps” away oversized material while letting correctly sized product fall through to a separate stockpile.
Unlike a trommel screen, which uses a rotating drum, a scalping screener uses an aggressive vibrating screen box mounted on an incline. This makes scalpers better suited for processing heavy, bulky, or abrasive materials like blast rock, excavated soil, concrete rubble, and recycled asphalt. How Does a Scalping Screener Work?
A scalping screener typically features a two-deck screen box with interchangeable screen media (woven mesh, punch plate, grizzly bars, finger tines, or 3D flip-flow screens). Material is loaded into the hopper by an excavator or wheel loader, then a vibrating feeder regulates the flow onto the top deck. Oversized material travels across the top deck and discharges off the end, mid-size product falls through the top deck and rides across the bottom deck, and fines drop through both decks onto a collection conveyor. This three-way split happens in one continuous operation—no need for reprocessing.
